Help Support Saint Vincent DePaul - February 9, 2021

(Words and music by Chris Tomlin) Worship—in all its forms—is not about us. It is about God and reorienting ourselves toward Him. It is a sacred task and not to be taken lightly. Occasional Services for the Assembly is the second volume of services, readings, and prayers in the Evangelical Lutheran Worship family, complementing Pastoral Care. Occasional Worship A persistent paradox, or a last chance? Vicarious religion describes ‘a certain way of being religious that derives from a particular historical heritage and which thrives in a particular kind of church the idea resonates more in the older generations than the young’ Davie, Religion in Britain, p.88. The Book of Occasional Services is a collection of liturgical resources related to occasions which do not occur with sufficient frequency to warrant their inclusion in The Book of Common Prayer. These materials are authorized by the General Convention through the provisions of Title II, Canon 3, Section 6 of the Canons of the Episcopal Church.

On Tuesday, February 9, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, BRGBelly will donate 20% of sales to the Saint Pascal Vincent DePaul Society. You must mention when ordering that this order is for the Saint Vincent DePaul Fundraiser. Phone orders, walk in carry out (dine in if COVID permits) will be eligible for this fundraiser. This will not include orders placed with a delivery service.

RENEW MY CHURCH - FORMAL DECREE - JANUARY 28, 2021

Worship is a lifestyle, not just an occasional activity. Jesus said the Father is seeking those who will worship Him 'in spirit and in truth' (John 4:23). In Scripture, praise is usually presented as boisterous, joyful, and uninhibited.

For every decision made, there is a formal decree made by Cardinal Cupich. A decree is a pronouncement or document that formalizes a decision within the Church. In this case, the decree included here concerns the decision for our parishes to unify as a new parish after our grouping’s Renew My Church discernment.

The decree states that St. Bartholomew, Our Lady of Victory, and St. Pascal will form a new parish on July 1, 2021. The decree states the new parish will have an ad interim name. This means that the parish will be called Our Lady of Victory and SS. Bartholomew and Pascal Parish until we propose a new name to Cardinal Cupich for his consideration and approval.

When you read the decree, you will notice the decree states St. Pascal Church will be the parish church of the new parish and that the churches of St. Bartholomew and Our Lady of Victory will be churches of the new parish. A couple of notes on this:

One implication of St. Pascal being designated the parish church means that the sacramental records of the new parish, as well as the past sacramental records of each of St. Bartholomew, Our Lady of Victory, and St. Pascal will be maintained at the offices on the St. Pascal campus in the future. Rome requires that a united parish’s sacramental records be kept in one place and for that location to be designated in the decree as the parish church. For the current time, each parish’s records will remain at their current locations, and we will update everyone when the records are fully brought together at the office on the St. Pascal campus. The hours and activities at each of the offices at St. Bartholomew and St. Pascal after July 1 will be important matters discussed in the coming months.

Second, the decree states that each of the churches of St. Bartholomew, Our Lady of Victory, and St. Pascal will be churches of the new parish. When a new parish is formed, all of the assets of each former parish become part of the new parish. This includes the churches. As shared at the announcement on Dec. 18, both St. Bartholomew and St. Pascal will continue to have a regular schedule for Mass, and regularly scheduled Masses at Our Lady of Victory will cease no later than the First Sunday of Advent in 2021. Until the procedure for formally closing a church occurs, a church remains available to use for occasional worship even if regular daily or Sunday Masses are not scheduled at the church. The specific Mass schedule after July 1 is an important topic we will discuss with parish leadership in the coming months.

Regarding the name of the new parish, there will be a process to include everyone. We will keep you updated on the timeline of when this process to consider a parish name will begin.

Until then, let us hold fast to the Lord’s promise that He is with us always, and trust in the fact that He is at work in a special way within our faith community and is creating something new for all of us.

Certainly, the process of renewal is an emotional one. For many of us, it is a time of significant change. So, let us also keep each other and our neighbors in prayer as we continue our journey forward.

Gordon W. Lathrop explores the place of the Bible as the subject of critical exegesis in contemporary liturgy. The text is grounded in the life of the assembly and the role of intertextuality in its creation. Lathrop finds patterns in biblical narratives that suggest revising our models of the 'shape' of liturgy (Dix, Schmemann) and our understanding of baptism, preaching, Eucharist, and congregational prayer.Saving Images calls for a new, reconceived biblical-liturgical movement that takes seriously both biblical scholarship and the mystery at the heart of worship.

Drawn from three decades of parish ministry experience, Steward of Stories opens the delightfully complex and nuanced world of the congregation to a wider audience beyond, but including, local parish pastors. Each chapter brings together dramatically different stories about ordinary ministry situations organized around a core thematic connection, including pastoral incidents focused on topics like 'Paying Attention,' 'Marry Me,' and 'Time to Go.' Linking these together is the interwoven wisdom of an experienced pastor who encourages readers to consider the theological and ministry challenges at stake for us all. Clearly written and highly accessible, these vignettes are meant for lay and clergy audiences alike, especially as they come together in their mutual life in Christian community. These are stories about real people drawn from actual events--accounts that will prompt thoughtful contemplation and conversation among the faithful about saints and sinners in everyday congregations and situations. Each chapter concludes with helpful questions for use in both educational settings and individual study. This book is ideal for personal reflection or group discussion and will stimulate a richer awareness of the challenges and opportunities we all face in the ministries we share.

Pastoral care has been traditionally understood as pastoral acts administered to individuals or small groups by an ordained or lay religious practitioner. As congregations in the twenty-first century begin to reclaim the missional nature of church, this view must be broadened to include care and concern for the needs of the larger community. A missional perspective of pastoral care embraces the notion that all of God’s people—not just trained professionals—are called to partner in the healing and redemption of the world. In Beyond Church Walls, Rick Rouse sets out to articulate precisely what such an approach to pastoral care looks like—and the substantial impact it can have on congregations and communities. A skilled teacher and pastor with deep experience in real communities, Rouse leads readers through the changing realities of the twenty-first century and to new ways for missional churches to succeed in offering pastoral care for the whole community.

Why is it we do funerals so well but often balk at even recognizing the death of a congregation? Couldn't we do grief ministry and funerals as well for social groups as we do for individuals?' challenges Gilson Waldkoenig, in his seminary classes. Waldkoenig, associate professor of church in society at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, contributes his special insights on the subject of church endings, in this unique and important book. Ending with Hope grows out of the understanding that although closing a congregation is in many ways about dying, it can also be about new life. Closing a congregation does not have to be about failure but can be about redirecting resources for new ministry. Contributors represent eight denominations and include more than a dozen pastors, lay leaders, judicatory staff, and others who have 'been there'—who have helped congregations through the painful closing process. Resources include models for assessing whether a congregation should close; reflections on members' and pastors' experiences during closing; case studies; guidance for deciding what to do with a building; suggestions for selecting and preserving documents and artifacts; rituals for healthy closings; a survey of historical trends regarding closings; and other helpful materials.

'For centuries the church has paired its church year—focused on Christ’s life, death, and resurrection—with a second calendar that uses the lives of saints as a lens to see God’s gracious acts. Evangelical Lutheran Worship has continued that practice with its calendar of festivals and commemorations. In this volume teacher and scholar Gail Ramshaw shows that those whom the church has lifted up are both faithful and fascinating, always pointing to Christ. Here is a guide to help you include these observances in your prayer life. Each day’s entry includes a brief chronology of the person’s life; a summary of why the person is remembered by the church; an image of, or related to, the commemoration; a quote from the person, where possible; and devotional hymn and prayer suggestions for the day.' -- publisher's website.
