Requirements for Using an M.2 Wi-Fi Card
Space and Key:There are two main requirements to use an M.2 Wi-Fi card for your Laptops. They include space and key. There should be an M.2 slot which you can insert the M.2 wifi card. It is also important that the connector used should have the same type of key(A and/or E Key) as the M.2 expansion slot.
Wireless Standards: There are a variety of Wifi connections, but 802.11a, 802.11b/g/n, and 802.11ac are the primary network requirement for accessing Wifi connections.
Hardware:Your computer must be compatible with your network card, standalone system or other devices including play stations and game consoles.
Software: Some WIFI cards are available with their unique drivers and software that can replace the regular operating system support.
Some standalone mobile devices have built-in Wi-Fi support systems that can detect and connect to wireless networks automatically.
Connections:Some wireless networks require a secure password to connect to their system. Others offer open or unsecured connections from a device or Wi-Fi compatible computer. There are public hotspots with secure connections which lets users log into a website with unlimited wireless access.
Understanding M.2 – NGFF (Next Generation Form Factor)
What Is M.2?
M.2 is previously known as the NGFF (Next Generation Form Factor) and it is the specification for computer extension cards and the associated connectors that are internally mounted. It is a replacement for the mSATA standard that uses the physical layout and connectors of the PCI Express Mini Card.
The M.2 is used basically as the interface for laptops and desktops with super-fast SSDs. In some cases, some laptops are designed to use an M.2 port as the basic means of wireless communication. Here, tiny low-powered cards, which have the combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radio capability, are mounted
There is more to the M.2 than one can conclude. From recent technological advancements, there is little or no doubt that it would supersede the old serial ATA format completely. The M.2 slot can interface with PCI Express 3.0 (the default interface for the graphics cards and other important expansion devices), SATA 3.0 (the cable that connects to the hard drive of the PC), and USB 3.0.
The M.2 has become preferable than the mSATA modern technology due to its flexible physical specification to allow different widths and lengths of the module. It also has more advanced interfacing features that make it perfect for solid-state storage applications than the mSATA. this is the reason why it is used in little devices such as tablets and Ultrabooks.

Which Devices Use M.2 Slots?
Your laptop or desktop computers are the two primary users of the M.2 slot card. They can also work well with smaller devices like notebooks and tablets.
M.2 slots act as support devices that interface with other connectors to deliver a more stable and secure wireless connection.
Provided your motherboard is compatible, the M.2 card can help launch the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless capabilities on your devices.
M.2 Cards: Length and Key
+ M.2 Length:
Most modern personal computers will likely have an M.2 card opening. They come in various lengths or key sizes. M.2 module codes contain both the width and length of a particular module; for example, 2242 as a module code means that the module is 22 mm wide and 42 mm long
The length and key capability mean merely your computer must have the right amount of space to accommodate the card length.
M.2 cards length can range from 30 to 110 millimeters long. You need to select a card that’s compatible with the size of your PC’s motherboard. Each M.2 card uses a similar width, depending on your connection.
+ M.2 Key:
There are four standard keys range from A, B, E, and M. The key to the M.2 card refers to the manner in which the matching slot plugs into the connector. It’s a type of groove in the M.2 card that ensures the correct device connects to your equipment.
While the width of the slot is standard 22 millimeters, the key may vary depending on your motherboard or laptop configuration. M.2 slots may match B-key, M.Key or B+M key, respectively.
B Key
The B. Key can only work with M.2 B key interfaces. It’s compatible with PCle x2 bus connectors. The key utilizes a slot on the right side of the card and to the left of the host controller. You’ll notice at least six pins to the right of the slot.
M Key
Conversely, the M Key can only work with M.2 key interfaces and works opposite to the B key configuration. The slot goes into the left of the card and the right of the host controller.
The M.Key also utilizes at least five pins to the left of the slot. It works well with PCle x 4 bus connectors and can operate up to two times faster.
B+M Key
The B+M.Key has openings for both B+M.Keys. Unlike the B and M. keys, the B+M.Key utilize both grooves with six pins at the right and five on the left. It can only accommodate PCle x2 speeds because of the physical construction.
A and/or E Key
M.2 Wi-Fi and WWAN cards tend to use keys A and/or E, since they only need the PCI Express or USB 2.0 buses and only need 30mm in length to fit all their key components.
The Benefits of Using M.2
More Storage Capacity:
M.2 cards let you transfer and store information at considerably faster speeds than regular SSDs. They allow more chip space and higher equipment capability. The cards also facilitate greater storage and file expansion and tend to be more flexible than regular cards.
Faster Connection:
The M.2 card also allows your Pc or laptop to connect faster and run more efficiently. Cards can transmit data from 50 to more than 600 percent faster than regular SATA, depending on your motherboard compatibility.
The cards also make wireless connections more seamless and secure. They provide significantly more coverage than regular connectors.
They are compatible with Bluetooth, headphones and other devices for USB interfaces. The cards allow more connectivity to your email, social and business networks.
Energy efficiency:
Using an M.2 card helps your computer system utilize and conserve power supply more effectively.
The card comes with a feature that allows your device to run on lower power when in sleep mode.
Additionally, the card also helps your system to recover at faster speeds when booting up after sleeping. The cards can help protect and enhance the lifespan of the battery.
Faster communication:
M.2 cards can help your PC or laptop transmits data faster and more efficiently within your storage devices.
The card utilizes the command system in a manner which helps make interfacing between devices more seamlessly.
They work well with PCle, USB, audio and their SATA buses. They can also interact with a plethora of command prompt to process data and storage capabilities at higher speeds.
There’s a card with the correct length and key to fit your existing system, depending on your device’s compatibility with the motherboard. It helps provide more storage space by supporting cards which are longer than standard SSDs.
How to Install M.2 module on PC?
Before installing the card, check to ensure the card matches the label in the motherboard slot.
- Switch the computer off
- Take out the mounting screw adjacent to the M.2 slot
- Insert the M.2 card into the slot with a little pressure. Monitor the notch to ensure the card sits at a slight angle when you set it in place.
- Use the mounting screw to secure the M.2 card in place
- Press and hold the card while fastening the screw back into position.
- Switch the computer on and check to see if the PC recognizes the new M.2 card.
