Spend lazy days on the beaches of Buye (a short car ride away), or venture further to the lighthouse at the Capes of Los Morrillos with La Playuela (30 min), or the mangrove islands of La Parguera or Gilligan's Island (Cayo Aurora) (25 min). With breathtaking views and secluded beaches, many local sites have been host to film and television productions.
1. Buyé Beach
Camino Buye, Cabo Rojo (24 min)
Buye is our favorite local beach because of the convenience and all the shade trees. It’s a short walk from where you park your car. It is protected by reefs and faces the west or toward the Mona Channel.
2. Playuela
Playuela, Cabo Rojo (30 min)
Of all our local Beaches, this is the prettiest. It is a small bay supplied by the Caribbean and has strong waves and under current. It sits in front of Playa Sucia, the bay that supplies our salt industry, and between two cliffs, ‘Capes of Los Morrillos’ that give Cabo Rojo its name — Red Cape. A must visit that should include walks to the lighthouse and capes including a natural stone bridge.
3. La Parguera
Lajas, Puerto Rico (25 min)
La Parguera in not a beach but a coastal village belonging to the town of Lajas (just east of Cabo Rojo). It sits across from a cluster of mangrove islands making it very picturesque. You can rent small boats by the hour and swim around the keys or snorkel through channels between the keys. The entire area is protected by reef and the waters in most areas are stand up deep. There are businesses at La Parguera that can arrange for snorkeling/diving trips. There are also many seafood restaurants in the village.
4. Gilligan's Island
Guánica, Puerto Rico (35 min)
Cayo Aurora, the key’s formal name, is located in Guanica, two towns over to the south east, is a nice day trip. It too is comprised of mangrove islands that you take a ferry to. The ferry leaves and returns every hour. They also offer lunch that you prepay and the ferry will bring it out to you at your requested time.
